How Chiropractic Can Help Lactation
We want to help babies have the best start at life and make it easier for our mommies! I went through my own breastfeeding challenges & pain. I did not give up. It lead me to a new path of getting certified as a lactation specialist so I could help other mothers through this journey. I am now an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and I hope to help as many families out there as I can!
Here is how chiropractic can help lactation:
1. For the baby: Diagnose muscle tightness and joint restrictions that affect the infants’ ability to achieve a good latch. If babies cannot rotate head, it will affect rooting reflex, if baby cannot extend head, positioning in a cradle or cross cradle or biological nurturing position can be difficult. If baby has a torticollis or some tightness in the neck or body, they may prefer one breast over another. If the jaw is clenching, the baby will not be able to open mouth wide
2. For the mom to achieve and maintain supply - the nerve that supplies sensation to areola is T4, important for nipple sensation and MER- if pectoralis muscle is tight, can affect lymphatic drainage affecting engorgement…
3. Moms birth or breastfeeding injuries: wrist pain Studies have shown birth interventions especially forceps and vaccum are associated with BF difficulties. Chiropractic and other gentle manual therapies can help babies overcome these strain on their neck, head and body!
